While living in Phnom Penh, I became friends with a British woman named Nicky Scales. Nicky is a high school physics teacher who spends all of her money and spare time helping cats and dogs. On weekends she paid a young Khmer vet who was training at a western clinic to come with her to pagodas to translate, vaccinate, and deworm the animals. Many of the photos in this essay were taken between 2012 and 2013. Some are from 2015. The organization has grown from one woman's passion project into an official NGO with that young Khmer vet as president. The Phnom Penh Animal Welfare Society (PPAWS) works to educate, to spay and neuter, and to generally make life better for the cats and dogs of Cambodia.
